چکیده

1 . A study of exercise physiology in 117 children aged 6-16 is described including the measurement of cardiac output by the Indirect (CO,) Fick Principle. 2. Computer produced graphs enabled various alternative values for arterial Pco, (Pa,co,) to be inserted simultaneously into the Fick equation for cardiac output and the Bohr equation for dead space. 3. Dead space could be estimated with reasonable accuracy using end-tidal Pco,. 4. Cardiac output determination was unreliable at rest due to the small venoarterial Pco, difference but it was very good on exercise when this difference is much larger. 5. The Pa,co, used for the calculation of cardiac output could be derived either from ear lobe Pco, or end-tidal Pco,. However, the best estimate of cardiac output was that using the Pa,co, implied by assuming a normal dead space.

Causes of a high physiological dead space in critically ill patients

Since around 1950, physiological dead space - the difference between arterial and mixed expired pCO2 (partial pressure of carbon dioxide) divided by the arterial pCO2 - has been a useful clinical parameter of pulmonary gas exchange. In the previous issue of Critical Care, Niklason and colleagues remind us that physiological dead space, while easily measured, consolidates potentially very comple...

The Diagnostic Value of End-tidal Carbon Dioxide (EtCO2) and Alveolar Dead Space (AVDS) in Patients with Suspected Pulmonary Thrombo-embolism (PTE)

Introduction: Capnography, is an easy, fast and practical method which its application in the diagnosis of Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) has recently been studied. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) and the alveolar dead space (AVDS) in the diagnosis of patients suspected to PTE who have been referred to the emergency department. Materials and Metho...

Effect of Endurance, Resistance and Concurrent training on the Function of the cardiac of healthy middle-aged women

Background & Aim: Cardiac functional adaptations are affected by gender, age, intensity and type of exercise. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of endurance, resistance, concurrent training on the cardiac function. Methods: Forty healthy middle-aged women (mean age 44/62±3/45 years, height 157/75±4/87 cm and weight 73/27±10/64 kg) were randomly divided into four groups (10 person...

Conduction and Dead-Time Voltage Drops Estimation of Asymmetric Cascaded H-Bridge Converters Utilizing Level-Shifted PWM Scheme

Linear AC power supplies can be replaced by their nonlinear switching counterparts due to the lower voltage drops and higher efficiency and power density of switching-mode inverters. Multilevel cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converters are the preferred inverter structure because of modular configuration, control, and protection. The output voltage quality in CHB converters depends on the number of ou...

Estimated vs actual values for dead space/tidal volume ratios during incremental exercise in patients evaluated for dyspnea.

The physiologic dead space/tidal volume ratio (VD/VT) at rest and during exercise is a sensitive measurement of gas exchange that reflects matching of ventilation to perfusion, but requires an invasive measurement for its calculation. Determining VD/VT noninvasively uses estimations of arterial PCO2 based on the end-tidal PCO2. To further standardize incremental cardiopulmonary exercise testing...
